Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are the most frequently occurring type of chronic wound, accounting for approximately 80-90 per cent of all lower extremity ulcers. VLUs are a big problem for both patients and health service resources. In the United Kingdom, venous leg ulceration alone has been estimated to cost the NHS £400m a year. In the US, VLUs cause the loss of approximately two million work days per year.
