STATUS QUO DIABETES RESEARCH IN INDONESIA

Diabetes Mellitus is an epidemiology problems in the world, both prevalence and incidence increase year by year. This is a metabolic disease related to inadequate insulin hormone.

As one of most populated country, Indonesia also has a high diabetes mellitus population. According to Shaw et al predict 10 ten diabetes mellitus countries.

Based on the table, we can see that in 2010 Indonesia posed as the 9th populated diabetes country with a number of patients as 7 million, then increase rapidly in 2030 as the 6th populated diabetes country with a number of patients as 12 million.

However, there is a limitation of research and publication related to diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. Based on Diabetes research and clinical practice journal (IDF Journal), there are no authors from Indonesia.

In comparison with the UK, Japan and China, there are so many authors (and researchers) who conduct diabetes research. Interestingly, even though not so many diabetes cases in Korea, but they are leading in diabetes research.

This is a challenge to Indonesia health care profession to conduct research with will leading to increase the quality of care among diabetes patients.
